The Ricky Martin Foundation celebrated the official inauguration of a community nursery at Centro TAU, the result of a strategic and visionary alliance with the Corporation for the Conservation of the San Juan Bay Estuary. This new space represents a milestone in environmental education, ecological restoration, and community empowerment efforts in Puerto Rico.
This project is the result of a collaborative process in which both institutions decided to materialize a scientific, educational, and community collaboration that today translates into action, life, and hope for the coasts and communities of the island.
Environmental Rights as Human Rights
The Ricky Martin Foundation reaffirms that the right to a healthy, clean, and sustainable environment is a human right recognized by the United Nations. Environmental degradation, pollution, deforestation, and climate change are not merely technical challenges — they are realities that directly impact life, health, access to water, food, housing, and the integral development of people.
From this perspective, environmental protection is inseparable from the defense of human rights. The active role of communities as protagonists in protecting their territories, in citizen oversight, in denouncing environmental violations, and in adopting sustainable practices such as recycling, watershed protection, and responsible agriculture is also recognized.
This approach aligns with the principles of environmental justice, which demand that the most vulnerable communities do not bear a disproportionate burden of pollution or the risks associated with climate change. We reaffirm that healthy ecosystems mean safe communities.
The Role of the Nursery in Coastal Resilience
The nursery inaugurated at Centro TAU transcends its physical dimension. It is conceived as a coastal resilience laboratory, from which seeds have been collected, coastal vegetation transplanted, mangrove propagules propagated, and scientific knowledge generated that strengthens dune, mangrove, and marine ecosystem restoration efforts in the region.
This space will enable communities to learn about the importance of planting and caring for plants, promoting the protection of ecosystems that filter water, reduce erosion, mitigate the impact of storm surges, and contribute to adaptation against increasingly intense natural phenomena, such as those experienced in recent years.
In this way, a future with safer coasts and healthy ecosystems for future generations is being built.
