Latin popstar Ricky Martin travelled to Cambodia on Wednesday (March 26) to experience first hand the fight against child trafficking and sexual exploitation, on a fact-finding mission for his foundation.
According to United Nations statistics, an estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked every year.
"He want to see for himself," Angel Saltos from the Ricky Martin Foundation said.
Martin met with the country's Interior Minister Sar Kheng and visited a number of organisations that are involved in the fight against human trafficking.
The singer addressed the issue in a recent article for The Miami Herald, saying that he had experienced a "personal awakening" following a visit to India in 2002, where he "witnessed the horrors of human trafficking, as we rescued three trembling girls living on the street in plastic bags - I knew the foundation had to shed a light on a taboo subject: human trafficking."
Further in the article Maritn writes, "It's our common duty to uphold the principles of social justice for our most vulnerable population: the world's children, to whom both the present and future belongs."
