Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin will be honored as the Latin Recording Academy's person of the year for his accomplishments as an entertainer and humanitarian, the academy said Thursday.
Martin will receive the honor at a dinner and concert set for Nov. 1 in New York. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will benefit the singer's Ricky Martin Foundation, which advocates children's rights globally.
Past honorees include Carlos Santana, Julio Iglesias and Emilio Estefan.
``His musical accomplishments are matched by his endeavors as an advocate for the welfare of children around the world,'' Latin Recording Academy President Gabriel Abaroa said of Martin. ``It is a great pleasure to honor this man of limitless talent, passion and sense of caring.''
Martin is best known to U.S. audiences for his dance hit, ``Livin' la Vida Loca,'' and he's considered one of the most successful Latin music crossover acts. He has sold more than 60 million copies of sound recordings, videos and DVDs worldwide.
In 2004, his foundation launched People for Children, which works toward the elimination of human trafficking, especially trafficking of children. He has also served as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.
Martin is currently in Miami for Thursday's taping of a new MTV Unplugged. The show is scheduled to run in November on MTV Latin America, MTV Tr3s and MTV Puerto Rico.
